Lesson #3

A Rose For Emily

"A Rose for Emily" was an enjoyable lesson for me this semester. This short story was so different compared to others I have read before. I liked how dark this story was and mysterious, the main character not having voice in this made it more interesting. I could picture the story vividly as it went on and as professor Candia explained it thoroughly. Every chapter was told from someone different within the town she lived and they became Emily's voice. During this lesson I learned about different narrative perspectives that I wouldn't normally pick out when reading a story. I learned more in detail of first, third and third person omniscient which the play was told from. Dissecting a story into categories and being able to identify the characters and who is telling the story is a strategy that is going to benefit me in the future. This story was also unusual for the format it was written it, the time periods were not inline, they were staggered throughout and I enjoyed how different it was.  William Faulkner included many important real life themes into this play such as the decay of the south, racism and gender. Overall I thought this was great story, I would love to read it again.
